Bugs

bugs.

today, I saw lots of them.

one of them was the first japanese beetle of the season.

at least the first japanese beetle that i had seen this season.

ugly son of a gun.

eating my petunia.

so, i forked him.  over and over.

he will not eat my petunias any longer.

then, i was out in the backyard with Meredith and she decided that she wanted to take a peek inside the birdhouse.  the occupants have already hatched, grown, and flown -- so we opened up the door and peeked in.

i was stunned.

earwigs.

not just a few, but a whole lotta few.  probably over 100 of the little suckers, easy.  i was surprised to say the least.  Meredith was horrified.

i looked up earwigs online (hence: the picture above) and read that they feed on a variety of dead plant and animal material.  i figure they settled in the birdhouse maybe because of the bird crap, the dead grass that mama sparrow dragged in there, and maybe even some leftover gunk from the hatched eggs (??).

anyway, i busted up their colony and cleaned out the birdhouse.

earlier in the day, i had seen the biggest bug of all.....

i pulled up to a stoplight right behind a very slick looking light blue VW beetle.  was a really sharp classy car.  they have really tooled those cars into an impressive looking ride.  probably in my top 5 "mattie wants that one" cars right now.

who knows?  i may even have a sweet dream tonight about that VW bug.

sure hope there are no nightmares about earwigs.....

out for now.
