How Great Thou Art.
one of probably the top 10 most cherished hymns of all-time.
just a short 90 minutes ago, it was so cool to hear the words of this hymn echoing thru the concrete canyons of downtown Decatur.
tonight was the weekly performance of the Decatur Municipal Band in the beautiful park on North Water. featured soloist for this evening's show was Mike Engelhardt, who is music director at our church.
he did a variety of songs, including a Ray Charles medley, a collection of Lennon/McCartney stuff, and even an assortment of Bon Jovi songs. plus, he ended the show with the Star Spangled Banner.
but, as much as I enjoyed "Livin on a Prayer", "Georgia on my Mind" and "Hey Jude", it was "How Great Thou Art" that was my favorite.
the lyrics are incredible and powerful....
O Lord my God, When I in awesome wonder,
Consider all the worlds Thy hands have made;
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed.
and this....
When Christ shall come, with shout of acclamation,
And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart.
Then I shall bow, in humble adoration,
And then proclaim: "My God, how great Thou art!"
these words, sung beautifully, bouncing against the Reynolds Building, reverberating off ADM City Center, echoing up and down Water Street towards Eldorado and Central Park and beyond.
how cool! how great!!
