Lincoln.... a Fine City

Our family (especially the lovely Mrs. Honnold and me) really, really enjoy the city of Lincoln Illinois.

So much history.
So many cool things to see.
A really awesome courthouse square.

For those who don't know much about Lincoln, here are 7 "quick facts":

-- it is the first U.S. city that was named for Abraham Lincoln;  Lincoln (not yet President) was present for the naming ceremony (1853)

-- it is the home to Postville Court House, which was one of the places Lincoln held court when travelling his circuit (see picture below)

-- it is a Route 66 community;  the Route passed right thru Lincoln from 1926-1978

-- there are 2 colleges in Lincoln, both with very unimaginative names:  Lincoln College and Lincoln Christian College

-- Lincoln has a forgotten cemetery with an intriguing/dark past that I want to visit sometime;  this article explains it all (http://mybignoise.blogspot.com/2007/08/forgotten-lonely-place.html?m=1)

-- it is the home to the world's largest covered wagon (see picture below)

-- in downtown Lincoln, you can see an enormous ball of twine in addition to a phone booth on the top of a building

Today, as we were passing thru Lincoln on our way back home from Thanksgiving festivities, I snapped a few photos.  Here are 3 of my favorites:

(back in October, I also took some photos in Lincoln and posted those HERE)

Every time that we pass thru Lincoln, it seems like there's something new to see.  Kinda like a big scavenger hunt -- really cool stuff in a really cool city.

Out for now....
