Unionized College Football

I find this total poppycock.

Look what the Northwestern (Evanston, IL) football team did today.....

For the first time in the history of college sports, athletes are asking to be represented by a labor union.

Kain Colter, a starting quarterback and receiver who completed his college football career in December, was joined by Ramogi Huma, president of the National College Players Association.

Huma filed a petition in Chicago on behalf of football players at Northwestern, submitting the form at the regional office of the National Labor Relations Board to recognize a new union, the College Athletes Players Association. At least 30 percent of employees (in this case, 27 NU football players) need to be in favor of the union to file the document. A hearing is set for February 7, an NLRB spokesman said.

Craziness, right?

But look what this guy from Forbes says in response....

If student do indeed gain union status, the students could then have the benefits of other unions, including the ability to collective bargain about working conditions, pay and benefits.

University janitors have that right. Why not those who perform other services? Both can take classes, earn credits and earn a degree.

Unbelievable to even think this is being given serious consideration.

There needs to be a firm line drawn in the sand making it clear that academics come before athletics.  And no union is going to disrupt that important concept.

But, college athletics are big, BIG money.  A logical decision isn't likely to happen.

Out for now....
