College Football Thoughts
I watch a little bit on TV here and there, but it doesn't come close to being a priority for me on Saturday afternoons.
Basically, if I see a game, great. If I don't, it's not a big whoop.
All that said......
Recently, I have spotted a couple very interesting articles about college football that I felt cool enough to share here.
First:
This report has the results of a fascinating look at where college football reigns supreme:
Here, we (look) at another question: not which teams fans root for, but the proportion of the population in various places who are fans of any college football team.
Not surprisingly, Central Illinois is pretty much bare/blank. Other than a little excitement generated by the Orange and Blue over in Champaign-Urbana, "The CI" pretty much takes no interest in college football.
Second:
Have you heard what's in place this year for the first time ever with regard to the crowning of the college football national champion?
They've moved to a 4-team playoff format, with an announcement every week to update the nation on who those 4 teams are.
It really is crazy fascinating how they are doing this. Read about it:
This writer does not think it's a good system though:
It does make for good TV though (every Tuesday evening at 6:00 CST on ESPN).
I spotted this on another site and thought it made sense:
Ranking football teams is an art, not a science. Football is popular in some measure because the outcome of a game between reasonably matched teams is so often decided by emotional commitment, momentum, injuries and the “unexpected bounce of the ball.” In any ranking system, perfection or consensus is not possible and the physical impact of the game on student athletes prevents elaborate playoff systems of multiple games.
So, that said, they've tried to come up with the most genuine/legit system possible.
As we approach the end of 2014 and all the Bowl Games, it'll be very interesting to see how the rankings play out.
1 guarantee that I can make..... there'll be no Central Illinois teams.
Out for now.......
