My solution: gift cards. No, they are not an "easy way out" of the present-buying experience.
Rather, they are a way to say "I care about you enough to not buy you something cheap or crappy or unwanted that will cause you to have to use your time and/or go out of your way to stand in some immensely stupid long line to return the stupid thing".
Right?
