I learned something today.
Breast milk is regularly donated to other mothers. Or sold on the internet.
I thought it was a joke.
No.
"Big milk producers are able to make thousands of dollars selling their surplus breast milk, which led Wired magazine to call breast milk “liquid gold” a few years ago. The going rate now is something like $1 to $4 per ounce. No wonder some women consider the sale of their breast milk a part-time job."
But there are hazards:
"While breast milk is not regulated by the FDA, a 2010 warning clearly states the government's stance: 'FDA recommends against feeding your baby breast milk acquired directly from individuals or through the Internet.'"
"An analysis recently published in the journal Pediatrics found one of every 10 of those samples wasn't 100% pure mother's milk. Instead, the donor milk contained added cow's milk or milk-based formula powder."
Yikes!

The thought of having a baby drink the milk of another woman creeps me out.
Maybe I'm overreacting.
Maybe it's just nature.
But I find the buying and selling of this "commodity" really, really bizarro.
