Picture 5/15: Farewell Bridge

(picture 135 of 365)

That's the bridge that crosses the Mississippi River between Savanna Illinois and Sabula Iowa.

Opened in 1932, it is in its final days.

Construction on a replacement bridge begins this year.

The bridge is quite the trip.

Extremely narrow (no shoulders).

35 MPH speed limit.

Open steel grating deck.

And thus, very very noisy to cross.

We had one lady tell us that a crossing of the bridge during the winter is like skating on ice.

We drove across it twice today and will hit it again on our way back thru on Sunday.

I hate to see old, historic bridges come down, but I'll freely admit that this one is a death trap waiting to happen.

Out for now.......
