Country Cathedrals


This is a great read.  One that I can definitely relate to as the elevator legs sticking above my hometown of Kansas always served as a way to lead me home.

And continue to do that even today.

These monolithic silo and elevator complexes soar above most of the towns they call home. Some gleaming steel, others dovey concrete — all with a commanding presence. Craig Anz, associate professor of architectural studies at SIU, said these elevators are defining parts of their communities. He said while many may not be a “tourist in their own towns,” recognizing the beauty of what is around them, many would certainly notice if the structures were one day gone.
Anz said it all boils down to the elevators and silos alike creating a sense of place. He used the example of a college student leaving town. He said when the student returns, such a structure would likely be one of the first thing he or she makes eye contact with and seeing the elevator could certainly signify home.
