Never heard of this Cardinal:

But the card was half-price, and I had 50 cents to burn.

Sounds like Dixie (Fred) Walker was a jerk though.  From Wikipedia:

Walker vocally opposed the participation of black baseball players regardless of their skill.

Ahhhhhh...... now I see why the card was half-price.
