40K for Illinois Teachers
In case you've missed it, there are bills circulating in both Houses of the Illinois Legislature which would raise the starting salary for teachers in the Land of Lincoln to $40,000/year.

Facts:
-- When it comes to talking about "the youth" of America, teachers have an incredibly important role in developing the intellect and shaping the future of their students.
-- There is, without question, a terrible shortage of high-quality, dedicated teachers here in Illinois.
-- Property taxes are too high.
-- Many schools are out of money.
Is $40,000/year the solution?
There's no question that teachers (MOST teachers) are definitely worth that.
And, there's no question that $40k will definitely help in attracting more to the profession. (Will it be enough to attract them to Illinois, though?)
Gotta keep in mind that "compression" will also come into play here. What's that? A 10-year teaching veteran who's currently making $30k, $35k, $40k, etc. will also need a raise in order to keep the pay scale equitable.
What's going to pay all these salary increases? The state is broke. Property taxes are high.
Will curriculum and/or teaching positions be cut?
Uggggggh.
