Shrinking Chicago
Chicago is shrinking faster than any other major metro. New York and Los Angeles saw declines in 2018, but at lower rates than Chicago, which is now in its fourth straight year of population loss.
More to the story.......
While much news coverage of Illinois’ population woes has focused on residents who move away, the census numbers also reflect “natural” gains or losses — births vs. deaths — and the number of people who arrive from other counties, states or other nations. For the Chicago area, decreasing birthrates and stagnating international migration have added to the impact of residents choosing to move elsewhere in recent years.
And more to the story.......
Of Illinois’ 102 counties, 86 lost population over the year. And 93 have lost population since 2010.
The overwhelming driver of this decline is simple: the flight of Illinoisans to greener pastures, and a lack of new bodies from elsewhere to replace them. An aging population means less natural growth from births outweighing deaths, which makes migration patterns matter even more.
What a sad, sad mess we are in. From Chicago to Cairo...... Illinois is withering.
Grace & Peace & Love to you all -
