LIFE IS CHEAP IN THE NEW STATE OF ILLINOIS

AMONG A disturbing number of actions coming out of the Illinois General Assembly last week, which included the legalization of marijuana, expansion of gambling and more taxes, the most grievous was the passage of the “Reproductive Health Care Act” which legalizes the killing of an unborn child at any stage of a pregnancy — even nine months! The “Reproductive Health Care Act” is a sugar-coated name for a bill that makes Illinois the abortion capitol of the nation!
I AGREE with a statement from the Illinois Catholic Conference that called passage of the legislation “a truly sad day for Illinois.” “Supporters of the abortion bill portrayed it as a simple cleanup bill, taking old statutes off the books,” it said. “This is false. The bill includes new provisions that render any regulation of abortion impossible, strip away standards for — and regulation of — clinics where abortions are performed, and mandates private insurance plans subject to Illinois’ authority cover abortion. “It sends a message to everyone in our state that life is cheap. We will continue to make our case against such callous disregard for human life whenever it appears in society.”
SEN. DAN McCONCHIE, a Republican from Hawthorn Woods, said, if “cleaning up and clarifying” some of the language in the old bill was all the new bill aimed to achieve, it would be one page — not 126. t who voted against the pro-abortion bill. Three Democrats voted “present”.
SEN. CHAPIN ROSE (R-Mahomet) also voted against the bill in the senate. Republican Sen. Jil Tracy, from Quincy, called the bill “extreme.” “It goes far beyond the current practice in Illinois. It has provisions that could endanger rather than protect a pregnant woman and it’s not needed under current Illinois law or federal law,” she said. “Once again in Illinois, we are passing bills looking to solve a problem that doesn’t exist.”
OUR TWO area state representatives, Dan Caulkins (R-Decatur) and Sue Scherer (D-Decatur) were also no votes in the Illinois House on the Reproductive Health Care Act.
Caulkins stated: “This pro-abortion, anti-life legislation is a travesty. It makes abortion a fundamental right in Illinois and takes away any right to life for the unborn. SB 25 is the biggest expansion of abortion in Illinois since Roe v. Wade. As a conservative, pro-life Republican, I was proud to stand with my Republican colleagues in united opposition to this horrific bill.”
THE DIRECTION of Illinois, whether it is in last week’s legalization of recreational marijuana, expansion of gambling, increased taxation on an already taxed-to-death population, attacks on small business, failure to pay its bills, etc., — is heading for a fiscal and moral cliff.
Ironic, isn’t it, that a state that outlaws the death penalty for rapists, murderers and serial killers because it is not “humane” has no regard for the lives of the innocent children waiting to be born. There is now no protection for the obviously most innocent in our state.
WHO SUFFERS from the lack of responsible legislation coming out of the state’s capitol? We do. Decatur and communities like us. We continue to fight to overcome the state’s obvious blunders, bad image and false projections, while trying to attract businesses and people to our community.
Legislation that is passed in Springfield often results in more state-mandated spending for communities like Decatur to deal with the effects of that mindless legislation. That is certainly going to be the case for Decatur and Macon County because of the legalization of marijuana
Usually, for every $1.00 in revenue the state receives from new legislation, we have to spend more to deal with its effect on our citizens. A state that is beyond bankrupt from years of unbridled spending and stealing from promised pensions, and wants to dig out by legalizing the illegal for revenue, has lost its way — and its mind!
INSTEAD OF the governor and his supporters hugging and giving high fives on the success of approving unrestricted abortions, legalized pot and a host of other changes, they should be a little more somber over a state that has gone so far down that it refuses to protect innocent children ready to be born. We are told that the “new” Illinois will fix our roads and bolster our infrastructure — but we will pay double in gasoline taxes and other tax and fee increases to make that happen.
I NEVER dreamed, in all of my years as an editor in Illinois, that our state, with a massive drug problem, would legalize marijuana (despite very vocal concerns of law enforcement officials), offer no protection for any unborn child and become a gambling mecca — all in the name of creating a “new” Illinois.
Quite frankly, it sickens me. The “new” Illinois, is downright grotesque and not as safe as the “old” Illinois. No wonder so many people and businesses are leaving our state.
