No one had ever seen anything like it before. It was expensive — about $200, or nearly $700 in today’s money — but it was insanely popular. Sony expected to sell 5,000 a month. They ended up moving 50,000 by the end of that summer.

I got my first (and only?) Walkman when I was in 5th or 6th grade, I think -- 1984'ish. And yes, it was very cool to be able to walk around listening to cassettes. (I don't remember mine having a radio.)
