Chicago Schools to Observe Indigenous People’s Day Instead of Columbus Day
Now, a couple days ago, this hit the news wire:
Colorado will replace Columbus Day with Cabrini Day, the first paid state holiday recognizing a woman in the US
Colorado passed legislation Tuesday to replace Columbus Day with Cabrini Day because bill sponsors say it doesn't represent their community members.
The first Monday of October will now honor Frances Xavier Cabrini, who according to the bill, is the woman responsible for creating 67 schools, hospitals, and orphanages in the United States and South and Central America throughout her lifetime.
"The pain that they (indigenous people) endure and the historical trauma endured by indigenous people in this country as a result of what Columbus has put in place is real. And this is a step forward in erasing that pain."
Ms. Cabrini -- definitely an interesting choice.
I was familiar with the name Cabrini from hearing about a housing project in Chicago. But, I did not realize "Cabrini" was a woman...... or that she was the first U.S. citizen to be canonized as a Saint by the Roman Catholic Church. Fascinating.

p.s. As previously stated here on MattChat, I am not a fan of erasing history...... no matter how ugly it may be. All of us - and especially the next generation -- must learn the full story about what took place so that we never ever repeat it again. That said, Columbus still needs to be taught despite the holiday being renamed.
