Waffle House Index

Until it was mentioned this week in the news, I'd forgotten all about it......

The Waffle House Index is an informal measure of a storm’s severity and its effect on a stricken community. It comes from Waffle House’s reputation for being well-prepared for disasters and either remaining open during disastrous weather or reopening shortly afterward.

Here's why it was mentioned this week:

Waffle House has declared a "Waffle House Index Red," as the chain closes more than fifth of its restaurants in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Georgia-based chain's approximately 2,000 restaurants are usually open 24 hours, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Now, 418 locations are closed, a Waffle House Facebook post said Wednesday. Waffle House had originally closed 365 stores on Tuesday.

So, as of a few days ago, 1/5 of the Waffle House chain had closed.  By now, it could be 1/4 -- or even 1/3.  Although those with drive-thrus are probably safe.

If 1/5 equals "Waffle House Index Red", what in the world would they call 1/2?  Never seen that level before.

Grace & Peace & Love to you all -
