Pig Slaughter

This #StupidCorona is causing absolute chaos with significant chunks of food production here in the U.S.

Previous MattChat posts have focused on milk, tomatoes and potatoes -- among other things.

Now...... we've got pigs in the news.

With coronavirus outbreaks closing slaughterhouses across the country, the American hog industry is running out of space to physically keep a backup of live pigs.

Hog farms are so crowded that producers are starting to euthanize their animals.

In a normal week, the American pork industry kills 2.5 million pigs. This week, it will kill only 2 million.

"We're looking at a backup of a half a million pigs a week, starting this week.  And we were already backed up by about a half million. This is bad."

Some people are asking, "Why don't you just give them away?"

Nice idea, but unfortunately, there are a whole bunch of issues with doing something like that:
- logistics
- food safety
- humane treatment of animals
- liability
- governmental red tape

Just another very unfortunate situation resulting from the corona chaos.

Grace & Peace & Love to you all -
