For years, the U.S. Postal Service has been broke.
Broke, broke, and more broke.
1980: stamps were 15 cents
1990: stamps were 25 cents
2000: stamps were 33 cents
2010: stamps were 44 cents
2020: stamps are 55 cents
And, USPS is still broke.
Now, we get this:
The already-ailing United States Postal Service is being financially crippled by the coronavirus pandemic, its top official says, but the Trump administration has shown no signs it will ask for emergency financial aid as it has for big businesses.
In a digital briefing before the House Oversight Committee last week, Postmaster General Megan Brennan told lawmakers that the agency would "run out of cash" by the end of the fiscal year in September without help from Congress and the administration, in part due to extreme losses being suffered as a result of COVID-19.
Brennan said the crisis has caused an unprecedented drop in mail. The Postal Service, an independent agency of the executive branch, anticipates “a $13 billion revenue loss directly to COVID-19 this fiscal year and a $54.3 billion additional losses over ten years,” she said.
There's been talk for years about dropping Saturday mail delivery. Wonder if that'll be a casualty of coronavirus?
