Liberation Day

May 5...... I had no idea about this.......

Liberation Day is a public holiday in the Netherlands that commemorates the liberation of Holland by the First Canadian Army during World War II.  For many Dutch people, Liberation Day is a time for patriotism and festive celebrations. Liberation Day is celebrated on May 5 each year, but it is only an official holiday every 5 years. It is preceded by a holiday known as Remembrance of the Dead. Remembrance of the Dead is a memorial day that is observed on May 4. In Dutch, Liberation Day is known as Bevrijdingsdag.

Unlike other countries, the Netherlands sets aside two days to commemorate the World War II and celebrate the country’s liberation from five years of occupation. May 4, Remembrance Day, is a day of solemn commemoration while May 5, Liberation Day, is a day of fun and joy.

You catch that in the upper citation?  Celebrated every year but only an official holiday every 5th year.

Yeesh, that's confusing one.  Wonder who came up with that?

Why not every year?

Grace & Peace & Love to you all -
