Pink Catalytics
Yet another spike in yet another focused area of crime here in the USA.
Theft of catalytic converters.
Can be stripped off a vehicle in 40-90 seconds.
Worth somewhere between $50 and $200 to the thief.
Costs somewhere between $1,500 and $2,500+ for the vehicle owner to replace.
What a mess.
Someone in Chicago came up with an idea...... paint the converters hot pink:
The idea being: reputable junkers/recyclers aren't going to want to risk their business reputation by getting caught with a pink one.
Other options to protect yours:
- buy a protective cage that fits around the converter
- weld rebar around the converter as a deterrent (will significantly increase the time to steal it)
- install alarm
