Picture 5/7: Anti-Mold

May 7 (picture 127 of 365) Have you ever seen one of these? An anti-mold chip. I hadn't seen one before. It came in a mail package containing our 8th grader's graduation outfit/shoes. Wonder what kind of funky chemicals are on this thing? Considering the "DO NOT EAT" warning, I'd suspect quite a few. If it'll prevent/kill mold, it'd probably do quite a work on all the microbes floating around the intestinal system. Out for now...... Matt

Picture 12/22: Honeycomb Knockoff

December 22 (picture 356 of 365) Growing up, we ate a lot of cereal. Cheerios, Rice Krispies, Chex, Raisin Bran, Bran Flakes, Corn Flakes, Wheaties. That type of stuff. The ones with not a lot of sugar. We did get to eat Honeycomb frequently, which was one of my favorites. As an adult, I have learned that Honeycomb is freakin' expensive. However, Sav-a-Lot has saved the day: What a stupid name. But the cereal inside the box with the stupid name is delicious. Long live Honeycomb..... I mean Hoot'n Honey!! Out for now..... Matt

Expiration Date Confusion

"best before" "sell by" "use by" "enjoy by" "expires on" Just a handful of the various messages that we see on food products. So much variety. So much confusion. Leading to so much food waste. Sounds like the message has finally been received: Last week, the Food Marketing Institute and the Grocery Manufacturers Association, the two biggest trade groups for retailers and grocery producers, collaborated on a new initiative designed to fight some of that confusion. That initiative sets out guidelines for simplified, standardized expiration labels on food, funneling all the current choices into two options: “use by” and “best if used by.” “BEST If Used By” describes product quality, where the product may not taste or perform as expected but is safe to use or consume. “USE By” applies to the few products that are highly perishable and/or have a food safety concern over time; these products sh
