Seven Cent Plastic Bags

You hear this?

New Chicago tax leaves shoppers holding the bag:  Beginning Jan. 1, a checkout tax of 7 cents per bag will be added at all Chicago retailers — from massive chain stores to mom-and-pops — in the city's latest bid to curb disposable bag use.

So instead of outright banning them, they're gonna tax them.

Yeesh.

This opinion piece published in the Chicago Sun-Times pretty much exposes the justification behind the new tax as a hoax.

My question:  are they actually going to take time at the end of each transaction to count the number of bags used?  This would delay the clerk from hitting "Total" on the cash register until she keys in the 42 cent tax for 6 bags.  This will ultimately slow down the check-out lanes.

And what about "self-check lanes"?

Out for now.......
