Subway Tech
"Subway Restaurants, facing one of the worst slumps in its history, is hoping to win back customers by losing its low-tech image."
Low-tech image.
Yeah, now that I think about it, Subway is pretty darn absent of technology.
Other than the cash register.
And the speedy oven.
And that digital sign out front beckoning me to come in for a breakfast sandwich.
The article continues:
Subway’s U.S. sales fell 1.7 percent last year to $11.3 billion, marking the third straight annual decline, according to research firm Technomic. For all restaurants, sales increased 3.9 percent in 2016.
Earlier this year, Subway confirmed that it was closing hundreds of locations, marking the biggest retrenchment in its history.
The solution that Subway management feels can stop the bleeding??
The sandwich chain is introducing touch-screen ordering kiosks and a new mobile app -- a bid to catch up with places like Panera Bread Co., which have credited technology with helping fuel sales. Subway is even testing dedicated pickup areas for mobile orders, shaking up the five-decade-old format of its restaurants.
The company, which has more locations than any other restaurant chain, also is adding digital menu boards and bringing Wi-Fi to some locations.
Touch-screen kiosks -- this sounds fun!
We'll no longer have to verbally instruct the sandwich artist?
We'll key-in our order then they'll follow the directions?
To an artist, that's gotta sound quite similar to a paint-by-numbers project.
And one of the other tech advances..... wi-fi. I guess I had no idea that Subways did not already have this.
McDonalds has been wi-fi equipped for years.
Yeesh, Subway really is behind.
Wonder if they are still kneading their dough by hand?
